Captain Miller has worked NY Harbor for nearly 15 years of his 21 year maritime career. Learning to sail right here in the upper bay, his resume spreads from small single screw vessels, to 180’ high speed ferries and has sailed one of the largest passenger carrying schooners on the eastern seaboard for over 10 years. Highly adept with preparing vessels for USCG inspections, the hands on approach and intricate knowledge of electrical and plumbing systems has helped numerous companies bring their vessels up to passable standards.
His straight forward, no nonsense attitude and impeccable work ethic have made him a sought after individual in the harbor. With a “no BS” policy, he will never oversell himself and stands pridefully by his accomplishments.
A brief history….
Timothy Miller began his career purely by chance with a newspaper clipping for a crew position his mother handed him a week after high school graduation. Delving quickly into the work and loving the rigidity and structure of working on a passenger vessel, he knew his career path was clear. Before the year was out he was promoted to lead deckhand, and assigned the position of Engine Room Attendant.
At the end of the cruise season, he moved to eastern CT, where he had a brief stint working at Mystic Seaport, starting as a crew member and tour guide on the classic steam boat Sabino, and again within months being promoted to engineer. Eventually moving to NYC, Timothy worked freelance aboard 6-pack charter boats, while also working for North Cove Marina and helping to rebuild the infrastructure after 9/11. By 2004, he was managing the marina, and began taking interest in sailing with the Manhattan Yacht Club that was based out of North Cove.
In 2008 when Manhattan By Sail purchased the tall ship Clipper City, they reached out to everyone they knew who could sail and by luck he was wrapped into that group. This inspired the drive to get his captains license, and from there spent years training new crew and captains, branching out to other company’s to widen his skill set, managing huge shipyard renovations and inspections and finally taking a port captain position with New York Water Tours. But the love for sailing brought him back to the first vessel he had under his command, Clipper City. In 2020 and through the pandemic, he was part of a major refit of both Clipper City and the historic vessel Shearwater. All the time, the love for taking on side projects and gigs never ceased, teaching a new sailboat owner the ins and outs of owning a vessel and sailing, refitting an old tugboats entire potable water system and jumping in to help other businesses in the harbor when they were short captains.
In late 2022, Eagle Ray Marine Services came to fruition, and since then Timothy has been working for companies big and small, corporate and private, all around New York Harbor. The business quickly expanded to a delivery business, moving boats of all shapes and sizes to and from New York.
