100-TON CAPTAIN WITH SAIL ENDORSEMENT
Holding a 100-ton license in NY Harbor for over a decade has given me the opportunity to learn a variety of different types of vessels. After working for a few of the larger companies in the harbor, I have driven everything from a 3600-hp, 900 passenger capacity ferry to J24’s. With minimal direction, I am comfortable walking onto most vessels and after a walkthrough of safety and critical systems, be able to handle them with confidence. Single or twin screw, with or without bow thrusters, air controls, hydraulic or electric, all fall under my comfort level. I treat every vessel I walk onto as if it were my own.
Some of my other career highlights were driving a high speed catamaran while working along the Potomac River in D.C., and working as the engine room attendant/senior deckhand aboard a small passenger cruise ship that traveled from Maine to Florida, including time along the ICW.
My sailing experience is primarily aboard the tall ship Clipper City, and the 84’ wood schooner Shearwater. As head captain, I was in charge of training crew and new captains, overall maintenance and general upkeep. I have also sailed smaller vessels including J24s, J80s, Beneteau 545 and Colgate 26s. I recently assisted a new boat owner learn her Hunter 36, and taught her everything from sail handling, engine preparation, internal system upkeep and winter storage.
